Paralinguistics are vocal cues to support our verbal communication, including pitch, inflection, volume, quality, rate, and enunciation. Men usually lower their voices in order to assert their authority and power. The scene between Anakin and Padme in Star Wars when Padme realizes Anakin has turned to the dark side shows this use of paralinguistics. Anakin’s voice begins soft and higher pitched when he first starts explaining himself to Padme. Once he becomes more forceful and angry, he lowers his voice in order to tell her “Don’t you leave me.” This clip shows many other gender concepts, including territorial tendencies of men and male proxemics, however I think the most obvious gender concept it portrays is the change in pitch of Anakin’s voice to assert dominance.
